Today I had a tough time finding one verse from the reading to focus on.
So instead I am going to expand on a comment I received about my SOAP entry on the Sabbath.
My commenter asked a few specific questions in honoring the Sabbath. Should I travel? Is it okay to watch football?
My uneducated, very simple answer is this:
My plan is to use that to day to relax more. I would like to set it aside to stop, recharge and enjoy the blessings I have been given. I am not going to get caught up in the legalistic side of what is okay and what is not, and I’m not going to limit myself to only ‘holy’ activities for the day. Instead I am just going to make a concerted effort to NOT use that day to get caught up, but instead to relax and be thankful.
Yes, I will probably drive, cook, make phone calls, discipline my children and do a few chores as needed. But I am going to make an effort not to do laundry, major cleaning, reorganization of the kitchen cabinets (or whatever) and those sorts of things.
And I’ll pray about it and see how that goes.
I believe God has been telling me over the past few days that I need to relax and recharge. I have been praying about getting everything done and He has responded with messages about rest. He designed a perfect system… we are at relax one day a week. And by looking past that gift and trying to be more productive by ‘working’ 7 days a week, I am violating His plan and becoming less productive.
So, that’s my take: No specific rules. Just a new approach.
As I am moving into new territory, I am curious here as to what any of you might think or have experienced.
I’m linking this to Finer Things Friday because I think that the Sabbath is truly a gift from God… and that observing it will certainly be a Finer Thing!
I am curious… Do you observe the Sabbath? Or not? And how? Please share.
