B 90 Days Day 4 SOAP: I don’t. God does.

Day 4 of the Bible in 90 Days

Today’s Reading: Genesis 40:12- Genesis 50:26

I hope your reading is going well. If you are slipping behind, try extra hard to catch up and stay with us. Take your Bible everywhere and look for chances to read. You’ll be amazed at how many opportunities you’ll find when you search them out!

Okay, on with today’s SOAP:

Scripture: Genesis 14:16

“I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharoah, “but God will give Pharoah the answer he desires.”

Observation:I don’t have the knowledge and power to interpret your dreams. God does.

Application: I love how humble and honest Joseph is. He fully recognizes that he is an instrument of the Lord. He doesn’t have his ego wrapped up in the gifts God has given him. Instead, he fully recognizes whose the gift really is.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for this reminder that all great gifts come from you and are yours. Thank you for using me in the ways that you do. I am astounded that you have chosen me to share your Word with others. Please continue to show me what you want me to do and how to do it. Keep me from getting myself wrapped up in it and going astray.

And please show others how you want to use them, as well. Guide us as we work to serve you in ways that are truly honoring to you alone.

Thank you, Lord.

  1. just finished today’s reading and am amazed at how God uses people who are just normal and sometimes sinful people. People who do not wait upon the Lord and take matters into their own hands ie Sarah giving Hagar to Abraham, Rebecca deceiving Issac into blessing Jacob instead of Esau. hope I got all of the names correct.

  2. Thank you again! We are done with Genesis!

  3. Amen!! Thanks for sharing your devotional with us each day!!

  4. Awesome reading today- and I learned that even when people mean harm to me, God can use it for GOOD! http://jasmalltowngirl.tumblr.com/post/2625037350/flippin-the-script-soap-devotional-day-4-bible-in

  5. How funny! I had the same exact verse for my second SOAP today! I finally started yesterday, and I am really glad I did!

  7. Hi Amy, I’m Jen. I “accidentally” came across your blog on Google, searching for something completely different! But I saw the “Bible in 90 Days” description and had to stop by. I also did this two years ago, and recently started again with some blog friends (we’re about 4 weeks in). We’re using Zondervan’s The Bible in 90 Days, but our Facebook/blog group is called “Bible Retreat 2010”. It’s been such a blessing so far. Joseph’s story was a favorite, and definitely humbling to me.
So happy to see you all are being blessed by your trek through the word!

  8. The 41:16 verse was also one I focused on during yesterday’s reading. Another translation puts it “It is beyond my power to do this.” As I am diving into a couple new ministries at church, I want my daily prayer to be ‘it is beyond my power to do this, but on You, O God, alone will I lean.’

I don’t do my reading in one sitting, but several times throughout the day, and I am finding that my mind is constantly lingering on the stories, the truths, the revelation. A very sweet place to be.

I loved seeing how quickly and completely God can turn things around. It’s such a great reminder for me – HE IS ABLE! What He has promised, He will do.

Interesting note – you realize, don’t you, that the dreams Joseph received were BASED on him going to Egypt? God knew all along exactly what would happen.

  10. Oh wow!
I had actually made note of this very verse (Genesis 41:16), along with part of Genesis 40:8 “…interpreting dreams is God’s business…” How important to be able to discern what is God’s business & to give Him all of the glory.

    Abundant Blessings,

  11. A lesson in KNOWING AND LISTENING TO all God has to say! Finished reading just now.

  12. Day 4’s reading was a breeze! I love the story of Joseph. My favorite verse today was Genesis 41:16
“I cannot do it” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “But God will give Pharaoh the answers he desires.”

ALL our answers come through Christ. We are nothing without him, it’s his light and truth that saves us.

  13. Day 4 read, yeah!

  14. I am always intrigued by the detail that is included in the stories.

I am following a suggestion from the B90 site to listen to the passages as you follow along in the Bible. It takes a little longer, but it seems to “stick” better for me and I am amazed by the details that I have missed through the years quickly reading thru these chapters.

I found them in the KJV for free at http://www.firefighters.org.

I am loving this story! Still on track, day four is nearly done.

  16. Hi there! Just wanted to check in with my accountability, since I wasn’t able to participate on Monday. We were helping a fellow Marine family to move and did not have Internet access until Tuesday.

I just finished (today!) reading through the Bible for my sixth recorded time, but all of them have been very spread out. I am really looking forward to seeing the “big picture,” as all the mentors keep mentioning. So exciting!

I am married to a wonderful man who serves our country in the United States Marine Corps, and we are contantly learning together about godly parenting with our 15-month-old little girl (plus one–or maybe two!–on the way)! I blog at http://www.trugars.com/ and love reading, writing, crafts, and cooking of all kinds.

My 90 days has become only 86, since I was trying to finish up my Bible-reading plan before I started, but I plan to begin Genesis tonight and catch up by the Monday check-in!

Thanks so much for the challenge; I will be praying for everyone.

The story of Joseph is actually one of my favorite stories of the Bible, so much so I’ve seen the musical several times! :-) I’m actually ahead in my reading and I plan to continue reading anyway to keep ahead as I know there will be days in the future I will not be able to read for one reason or another.

  18. I really enjoyed todays reading. I love how God used Joseph to do Great Things!
