Bible 180- In Genesis– Lots of adventure… and beautiful prayer

Hello, sweet Bible 180 friends! How’s it going? The Word sure starts off with a lot, doesn’t it? There is definitely a LOT of adventure, that’s for sure.

We are just four days in and the world has already been created, we’ve seen a flood, a few murders, marriages, births, a city destroyed, lives destroyed… and also protection, provision, lives lived and beautiful prayers and gifts given.

I promise I didn’t plan this when I set up the reading for today, but I could not help but notice how today’s reading started and ended with beautiful prayers showing total reliance on God.

Here’s what we saw in Genesis 24:12–

Then he prayed. “Oh Lord, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham….

Then we closed out our reading for today in Genesis 28 with verses 20-22:

Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “if God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father’s house, then the Lord will be my God and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and all that you give me I will give you a tenth.”

Amazing, beautiful stuff.

Remember what I said about finding new things every single time I read? Well, today was no exception. I called out to my kids and shared a new observation I made on the Rebecca, Isaac, Esau and Jacob story.

Some of these stories may be difficult to read. All have deeper meaning than we can grasp here, at this pace. Please just read, listen to what you hear now. Note your questions and save them for exploration when the time is right. And keep reading, keep wondering. Keep spending time in the Word.

And yes, there is more adventure coming in Genesis this week, so get ready. And keep reading.

I am so glad you are reading with me, and with our group.

In love,

I am curious as to what your new observation was. That is an interesting story for sure.

    1. I guess I had always glossed right over Genesis 26:35 where it says that Esau and his wife were always a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah. I knew Rebekah had preferred Jacob, I had never realized Esau had been trouble for both.

Amy – I don’t think that Esau was a source of grief for Rebekah, I think it is his two Hittite wives. Chapter 27: 46 says that Rebekah says to Isaac that she is disgusted with living because of these two Hittite women. Chapter 26:34 tells of Esau’s wives and then verse 35 says They were a source of grief – I always assumed “they” were the wives. Although we know that Rebekah loved Jacob over Esau.

        1. Thanks, LeeAnn– very good point!!!!
