Blogging Through the Gospels: Matthew 14

The reading for Sunday is Matthew Chapter 14.

When it is time to read, please start first by praying and thanking God for His many blessings. Be specific.

Next present your requests to Him. Ask Him for whatever you want and need.

Third, ask Him to guide you in your reading, so that you will hear his message for you today.

After you read, record your SOAP observations and then listen for three minutes. Set a timer and just  listen to what he might be sharing. Don’t ask. Don’t thank. Just listen. (You can pray more after you listen, if you like.)

Today we have guest SOAP’er. I’m excited to share what Penney heard in the reading. I love her honesty and can relate with this myself… although I am getting better at trusting.

Fearing God’s Call

Scripture: Matthew 14:30

“But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’”

Observation:

I need to trust in and follow after God rather than getting distracted by what I can see going on in the world around me.

Application:

Peter responded to the call of God and as a result of his response, he was walking on water!  I can just imagine the exhilaration and excitement he must have felt…UNTIL he realized that what he was doing just did NOT make sense!  And fear struck….

Looking back on this historical event, it’s easy for me to say “how could Peter have doubted?  Jesus was standing RIGHT THERE BESIDE HIM!”  But how often have I begun to follow the call of God to do something that would bring Him glory, only to be distracted by fear of what I could see going on around me?  Even more than standing right beside me, Jesus LIVES INSIDE ME, yet I have often been fearful of doing what God has called me to do.  And giving in to that fear?  That’s saying, “God, I don’t think You know what You are doing.”  Such distrust!  Such disrespect!  In the light of day I may not DREAM of saying this to God, but in the midst of the storms of life, this attitude can sneak up on me so easily….

In times of day light and times of storm alike, I MUST remember that my God is trustworthy, faithful, and reliable…more than my human mind can absorb!  He calls me to action and wants my response to be obedience that flows from trust.  And I can trust Him completely!

Prayer:

Lord, it is sometimes hard to let go of the illusion that I am in control.  Thank You for loving me.  Thank You for the honor of being used to bring You glory. Forgive me for the times I have resisted in fear.  Thank You for Your faithfulness in rescuing me from myself!  For myself and for all those reading this I pray that You would increase our faith!  Be glorified in us this day!  Thank You, in advance, for hearing and answering us.  In Jesus’ Name I pray, amen.

As I was reading the passage tonight, the story about Jesus feeding the 5,000 really jumped out at me. This scripture is always preached about, and it is phenomenal to say the least! Esp. considering that was NOT including the women & children! And they still had 12 baskets of food leftover!

Mat 14:21 About 5,000 men were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children!

But as awesome as this verse is, on the eve of Passover, what jumped out at me was… Here were 5,000 men, plus women and children. All these people following Jesus, yet, as he was beaten and tortured for our sins, NO ONE, NOT ONE of those people were there for Jesus! He stood alone. :( Even his closest disciples, Peter comes to mind, denied they even knew Jesus! :(

Yet, Jesus already knew this, he foretold what would happen. And still, He did it. He gave His life freely for each of us! What an awesome God we serve! Thank you, Jesus! And yet, that isn’t enough. Thank you could never describe how eternally grateful I am that He cared so much that He died for *my* sins!

  3. My verse for today was Matt 14:14–He had compassion on them and healed their sick. Even when he wanted to be alone for a bit, after being told about the death of John the Baptist, he still had compassion on the thousands of people who followed him. And I complain when my family wants some of my time? Something to think about

  4. How very true! I know I often say that I trust in Him but then when the storms of life start to rage, I try to take things into my own hands and I start to “sink”. The hardest thing is to give up that illusion of control and “Let go and let God”.

  5. Here’s my latest “Blogging Through The Gospels” post, on Matthew 14. Today I was impressed on the need to spend quality time alone with God.

What stood out to me is Matthew 14:17,18–where the disciples had such a small amount of food, but Jesus told them to bring it to Him. And he blessed it and a miracle occured, and it covered the amount of people they needed it to! :) I’m sure it will not be too hard for God to help my little resources cover the needs I have either!
