Daily Devotion: 31 Days in Proverbs: Proverbs 25

Proverbs in 31 Days with MomsToolbox August sure is flying by for me. My kids spent their first full week in school last week and I think I had my most productive week in years last week, as well. What was so great about it was that it was productive in so many ways. I got a lot of tasks done, and I also saw personal and business things with new clarity I hadn’t had. And I even took a few naps during the week, mostly guilt-free. I’m not saying that my kids being away during the day was the key to my productivity, but I know it helped. And I know I was able to really focus on them when they were home from school, instead of feeling conflicted about finishing up work tasks. That was a HUGE blessing. I’ve really enjoyed adding exercise to my almost-daily routine and, of course, starting out with my devotional each day has been fantabulous. I think both of those have helped tremendously with everything else.Speaking of that second one…

Today’s reading: Proverbs 25

This morning’s reading in Proverbs had a lot of meat in there for me, as so many of the Proverbs do. Here’s what grabbed me, though:

Scripture: Proverbs 25: 27

It is not good to eat too much honey, nor is it glorious to seek one’s own glory.

Observation:

I’m just going to focus on the first part today. For that, a re-stating would be: Too much of a good thing is too much.

Application:

Yes, too much honey  is just that: simply too much. It’s great to have good things in your life, whether those things are rewards or gifts or just simple discoveries. But too much of almost anything can also be detrimental, so it is important to watch out and guard yourself against them. That ‘honey’ can be any type of food, wine, other drinks, lounging time. It can also be certain situations or people in your life. I have an idea of what my ‘honeys’ can be. I need to watch out and enjoy them sparingly so that I can keep my life on the path for which I was intended. I’m sometimes super-discplined and great at this, and sometimes I slip up. Last week I did pretty well at keeping things in check. It is my prayer that I will continue this.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for this reminder that the sweet gifts you offer us in life are meant to be savored and not used for splurging. Help me to savor those gifts in the times they are intended to be savored and yet not indulge too much when I should not. Please help all of us to recognize when the honey gets too sweet and when it is time to stop the indulgence, whatever those things which trap us may be. Thank you, Lord, for this reminder and your unending grace and love, even when we trip up.

What about you?

What grabbed you in today’s reading? And how can I pray for you? I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments on this post.

I hope your Monday is as great as it can be. And, to everyone in Napa and its surrounding areas impacted by the earthquake, I so feel for you and have been in prayer for you. Hang in there. If we can help from afar in addition to prayers, please let us know how in the comments.
