Nook or Kindle? Which eReader do you love?

Now that summer travel and summer reading is in full swing, and now that the new Nook has been released, I am weighing the options of buying an eReader. But I am not sure which route to take… Kindle or Nook? Nook or Kindle? Or something completely different?

I have an iPad and use the Kindle app on it already, but I hate the glare from the sun. And my son is reading so quickly that I have to download books for him, too, in addition to all the books I check out, buy and cart on our travels. I’d love to lighten our load (and not have to share my device… Unless I fall in love with his. :) )
While on vacation last week at the Tyler Place several of us began discussing it and someone suggested I ask my readers for their opinions. So, here I am, asking you.

If you have an eReader, which one do you love and why?

I’m looking for one to serve solely as a reader, not one that will let me jump off and get crazy on the internet or anything.
Please weigh in on your favorite and let me know why. Which is lighter? Easier to use? Has better features? Allows you to lend and borrow books? Has a bigger library? Makes it easy to buy and download books on the go? Anything else you love?
I know you have an opinion, please share.

Funny you should ask. I was given a Kindle 1.5 years ago by my husband, and we both appreciate how much it’s cut down on the weight of books we travel with. Now, he’s just gone and bought a Nook, so we have one of each in our house! Both B&W only.

    Thoughts –

If the new Kindles are still using the keypad and joystick for navigating, we think the Nook’s touchpad works better for navigating (for purchases etc.). I think the Kindle is easier to read. The Nook is smaller and lighter.

We bought a Nook to have the opportunity to borrow books from the library, which the Kindle won’t do still. How this works at your library may be different from ours but there are still a limited number of copies available, and a very short window where you can claim your copy to download and read. Getting the Nook set up and getting the borrowed book onto the Nook isn’t just a simple one step option but it’s still better than the Kindle which has no borrowing option at all.

Note that if you ever go overseas with your e-readers that you will have roaming and downloading charges to download new books unless you do it through your computer.

  2. I have a Dell NextBook and I love it. It’s a bit larger than the Kindle but it comes pre-loaded with Borders.com app and I have always liked Borders. I’m looking for ways to get the Kindle app on my NextBook but haven’t figured it out yet. Anyway, it’s not a Nook or a Kindle but I hope that helps :)

  3. I just posted a blog today on my website about my Kindle. It addresses most of your questions, at least in respect of the Kindle. I currently live in the UK so don’t have access to the Nook, but in the interest of fairness, my US friends who have a nook are positive about them.

    Good luck in choosing!

  4. I won a Kindle — and honestly, don’t know if I would have ever paid money for one. But, I love it! And my kids borrow it to read the free downloads of classics that we get. I have no idea how it compares to the Nook, but I love having an ereader. I’ve even emailed my pdfs to it so I can read from that instead of the computer.

  5. I have a Kindle and love it, but I will say I still prefer real books to my Kindle for reading. What I do love about my Kindle is that it is so easy to always have a book with me. I can keep it in my purse and pull it out whenever I have a few minutes while waiting at a Dr. appointment etc. I used to forget to bring a book with me, but with my Kindle I always have one.

  6. I don’t know much as far as comparison. However, I have a kindle and I absolutely love it. When looking for an e-reader to buy, I just thought that the Kindle had the most to offer for me.

I knew that I would love my kindle. I love it even more than I thought I would. It is super light. I carry in my purse with me and bust it out whenever I have a free second.

    Hope that helps!

  7. I wish I could help….I am an iPad junkie but honestly don’t do much reading on it. I like the good old fashioned hard cover books. I’m really interested in seeing what everyone has to say, though, because I’d love to know more about lending and borrowing ebooks. It’d be much more frugal than buying them outright.
