Operation Intentional #Kindness

Want to help me spread more joy and kindness this year?

Random acts of kindness are awesome, but what if we could be intentional about these acts of kindness, and not let a week (or day) go by when we didn’t share some joy with those around us with kind gestures?

Robyn, a friend of mine from high school, celebrated her birthday one year by committing one act of kindness for each year of her life, all in one day. She had a blast making other people’s day and her tweets about it inspired me to celebrate her birthday with my own acts of kindness that day, too.  (Now she has established an organization to help people to do the same.)

The opportunities for kindness are out there, and I have no doubt many of you are taking those opportunities each and every day. But sometimes, we might need a little push, a simple reminder, a kindness assignment. And together we can share a LOT of kindness!

That’s why I am launching Operation Intentional #Kindness.

On the third Sunday of the month, here on MomsToolbox, I will post 5 kindness assignments as a part of Operation Intentional #Kindness. Throughout the month ahead it will be your mission (should you choose to accept it) to perform at least 3 of the kindness assignments posted.

These won’t be difficult. And because you’ll have 5 to choose from, I’m sure you’ll find a few that will be a cinch to do.

Then, let me know how it goes. Report back in the comments so we know you’re in and making a commitment to be intentional about kindness.

If you have any of your own ideas of ways to show intentional kindness, please share them so I can add them to our list of assignments.

Bloggers, feel free to grab my button to use on your own sites and invite your readers to join us.

Ready?

Let’s be intentional about being kind.

Operation Intentional #Kindness January Assignments:

(Choose at least 3 of the following to do this month. I’ll post a new assignment list the third Sunday of each month.)

  1. Put quarters in and then tape more coins on a vending machine with a note. (Thanks, Robyn, for this kind idea)
  2. Race ahead and hold the door for someone… or linger and hold it for someone who is waaaay behind you.
  3. Compliment 2 people you don’t know who look a bit down. (Don’t mention that they look down, just share some love.)
  4. De-cluttering? Donate gently-used books to your local hospital, school, or library fund-raiser.
  5. Take some treats or a fruit and veggie tray into the office, or send it to your spouse’s office, kid’s school or doctor’s office. (There must be someone you can surprise!)

  4. You are right about how easy some of this is to do! I already do one thing everyday! Thanks for sharing!

This is a great tool and reminder for us all! Thank you for sharing this. It’s exactly what my family needs right now:)

  6. I love this idea of intentional kindness because I think so many of us are so absorbed in all of our tasks or in such a hurry that we don’t realize that in our rush we are being rude, disrespectful or unkind. When I am focused, aware and intentional in what I am doing and of those around me, my eye’s open up to a whole new world. Even though I tend to be a naturally friendly/kind person I know I miss so many opportunities to express kindness, whether it be to share my smile or hold the door for someone.

What I find interesting and sad is that when I hold the door for people, smile and look people in the eye, am patient and friendly to the cashier at the checkout or just plain friendly, I am complimented on these things and it is almost like someone being kind is a rare thing or that I am doing something extraordinary. At Christmas time, I was thanked numerous times for my patience and lack of rudeness. While I encountered other kind people while shopping I encountered far more rude, unhappy people which just made me sad. So, I do think making oneself mindful of being kind and all the ways we can express it in our day to day lives, is a great idea.

I turn 50 this year and had been thinking about how to turn this into a good thing instead of dwelling on the fact of getting “old”. :) I had decided that in celebration of my 50 birthday I am going to do 50 acts of kindness/love or whatever you want to call it on or around my birthday. I didn’t realize someone had already beat me to this idea. :)

I do plan to take on your challange and do still plan on doing 50 acts of kindness for my birthday. I might add that kindness and joy begin at home so part of my focus is going to be intentionally spreading more of it to those I love most. I take on your challange with a big smile on my face!

  8. FYI your button has a typo it says kindess instead of kindness… I still put it on my blog so please let me know when you change it so I can do so too :)

    1. Yikes! Thanks for catching that! I’ll let you know when the new one is ready.

    2. The new one is up. :)

  9. I think this is a great idea! I’m part of group of crafty blogging moms and I’m sure they would all love the idea for teaching their (mine too) kids kindness towards others. I will share this with all of them, thank you! :)
