Philippians Devotional- Chapter 2

bible-study-post

For those of you reading along, I am so sorry to be posting my SOAP for chapter 2 late.

It has been an exceptionally full couple of days (or maybe months!!) and I hope not to keep you waiting again during this series. Thanks for hanging in there with me, though, and joining me in the reading. I’ve got my SOAP for chapter 2 ready to share below.

If you aren’t reading with me already, feel free to jump right in where we are and read with us from this point on. We are reading a chapter per week and this week we are reporting on chapter 2 and will read chapter 3. (You can read more about the process here.)

Using the SOAP devotional method, this is what stood out for me:

SCRIPTURE:

Philippians 2:13

For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. (New Living Translation)

for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. (New International Version)

OBSERVATION:

This is after were Paul says to continue obeying God with reverence and fear. He continues to encourage by saying that God is in us, guiding us, provided we have invited Him.

APPLICATION:

This is empowering to me, as it reminds me to look for the Holy Spirit’s leading and listen to it. God wants to guide us, we just need to listen and act.

PRAYER:

Oh, Father, so often I deviate from what you have set before me as your plan for me. Thank you for this reminder that you are always here, beckoning me, waiting on me to just seek you out, listen and follow. Please, Lord, keep this reminder on my heart and mind so that I will seek you more, glorify you more and live the life you have set for me.

So.. what about you? What did you hear God sharing with you in Philippians chapter 2? Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments or even share a link to blog post where you shared your thoughts on this reading.

What’s next?

This week we’ll read Philippians chapter 3 and compare notes next Monday, June 10. (I’m sorry I was late in posting this week. I’ll be better next week.))

The verses that stood out for me where verses 7-10

    rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature[a] of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death –
    even death on a cross!

9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

O-How did Jesus humble himself? By becoming obedient.

What happened next? God exalted him to the highest place

How? By giving him His name (and the use of it) No other name would be greater/more influential.

The consequence of that?angels & demons & humans should bow and recognise his Lordship.

A-I find it interesting that there is no imperative command in V 10-it’s not will or must bow but should.

This reminds me that we have free will-and so did Jesus yet he still chose to do his Father’s will and be obedient even to death on a cross.

If choose to humble myself as a human and become obedient this passage reminds me that God has chosen me and prepared a place for me and that i will shine like a star in the world-verses14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, ‘children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.’[a] Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky

P- Father what a wonderful thing that jesus did for me a sinner-humbled himself and died in my place-I pray that you keep me humble.

I chose Philippians 2:14-16. This book seems to really be speaking to me in how I parent our children. http://www.sincerelystacie.com/2013/06/my-thoughts-on-philippians-chapter-2.html

    1. Love this, Stacie, and how you are finding great applications. :)

Well, Amy, I’m just coming up with my own applications. LOL! I used to do BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) so I have learned how to discern what is being said and apply it to life I guess. I am really enjoying this study! Thanks for offering it!

    1. Thanks for reading along with me this month and your verse definitely stood out to me, too.
