SOAP Daily Devotion: Enjoying His Word

When I’m not reading through the Bible in 90 Days, I use this reading plan to keep me in the Word daily.

If you aren’t already following a daily plan, or you are between plans, I hope you’ll consider joining me. Just jump in on today’s date.

Today’s reading: Nehemiah 7-8; Acts 1

Here’s what I heard today using SOAP:

Scripture: Nehemiah 8:3

He read it aloud from daybreak till Noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of Law.

Observation:

For many hours Ezra read from the Book of the Law and the people sat and listened, taking it all in.

Application:

I know I certainly take for granted that I have several Bibles throughout my house, and several more on electronic devices. I even have more than one translation and can compare them or read them whenever I chose.

I can’t even imagine what it would have been like to have to wait to hear it read to me. I can’t imagine what it would have been like for a people to go years without even seeing the Book of Law and then discover it and take it in as a group.

Of course that waiting and anticipation would build up excitement and reverence.

How amazing this day must have been, as the people celebrated the Lord’s hand in rebuilding the wall and then sat and listened to His word together. I doubt one grumbled at ‘having’ to sit there so long. I bet it was an exciting day.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for the opportunity to read your Word so easily… in many different forms and in many different translations.

Please continue to guide me in drinking it in, relishing and appreciating that opportunity,  always seeing it as a privilege and gift.

When I feel tired and am tempted to skip my reading for the day, help me to remember the enthusiasm these people had as they heard it together, perhaps some for the very first time.

Thank you, Lord, for speaking to me every time I read and listen to your Word. Please guide all those who are searching to find you in your Word and relish those moments, as well.
