SOAP: Don’t listen to the enemy

Scripture: Psalm 64:1

O God, listen to my complaint.

Do not let my enemies’ threats overwhelm me.

Observation: The psalmist is calling on God to protect him from becoming overwhelmed by his enemies.

Application: I need to remember to call out to God when I feel a battle being waged over me.

This weekend I felt the enemy waging war against me in my head while cycling. I had so much fear and I couldn’t ride very well. I kept doubting myself and this caused me to not cycle as well as I knew I could. I clipped out on a 2 hills and fell on another. And I had cycled that route successfully before.

Once I made it through the (very hilly) park one way and was preparing to go back through, I stopped and really prayed over it. I told Satan to get out of my head. I told him that there was no way he would win me over so he should just leave.

I asked the Lord to completely take over and push Satan away.

And as I started pedaling I decided to just fill my mind with the Lord. I prayed over all the requests I have been given that I could remember. I praised God, using every name for him I could think of. (That Amy Grant song, “Emanuel” came in handy.” I told him how great and powerful I thought he was/is. And I made up my own little song reminding me to rely on his strength..

And I had a fantastic ride back through the park. He carried me up the hills and protected me on the fast speeds back down the hills.

Without him I would have been a frustrated mess again.

This psalm is exactly what happened to me this weekend. I was becoming overwhelmed by Satan’s threats. And God listened to my complaints and shielded me from him.

Hallelujah!

Prayer: Lord, thank you so much for your protection this weekend and always. When I feel a battle being waged, remind me of the verse and of this weekend and guide me in relying on you alone. Thank you for your faithfulness, kindness and love. And, in the vein of the Veggie Tales, thanks for being “bigger than the boogie man.”

PS  Here’s my song: (I’ll be singing it a lot April 19 as I ride through the same park.)

He is with me.

He is with me.

He is with me today.

He is with me.

He is with me.

He is with me to stay.

I am riding through the hills

And with him I am strong.

With him I can ride the hills all the day long.

( I did come up with another verse at a particularly long climb that had something to do with giving me a push so I wouldn’t land on my tush, but I can’t remember that one exactly.)

I am linking this to Works for Me Wednesday because this experience showed me that prayer REALLY does work for me.

  1. Thank you for the lovely reminder. Oh how often do I try to work through things on my own when all I really need to do is bring them to the foot of the cross!

  2. I try to remember when feeling overwhelmed to drop to my knees and pray to him

  3. What a wonderful testimony to the power of prayer and praise. It takes our focus off of ourselves and on the Lord. I am praising him now for protecting you on your ride and praying for continued peace as you go on your long ride.
