SOAP: Treating my husband with respect, not hot-headedness

So hot-headeness is not a word…. I hope you’ll let that one slide today.

Scripture: Ephesians 5:33

So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Observation: God wants me to have respect for my husband.

Application: I would bet He also wants me to show that respect.

I have a tremendous respect for my husband, I really do.

But sometimes I forget to treat him with respect or I’ll let emotions rule me and not speak as calmly (and rationally) as I’d like.

Last night my husband and I talked about ways we would like to be treated by each other.

He politely pointed out a few things I do which frustrate him. Then he said “Treat me like you would a stranger. I have never seen you be rude to a stranger.”

Ouch. He was right.

So often I treat others with more respect than my own family.

I need to keep this verse in mind and not only have respect, but work harder at showing that respect.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for allowing me to be in a marriage with a loving man. Thank you for enabling us to talk about our concerns and work through them. Thank you for drawing my bad behavior to my attention and please, Lord, guide me in my actions.

Stop me when I am interrupting or speaking in a tone that isn’t so nice.

Guide me to stop and think before I get too emotional.

Please let me hear the Holy Spirit’s guidance and help me to harvest those fruits of the spirit in Galatians more often.

Thank you, Lord, for this reminder. Help me to be honoring to you and to my husband always. He is such a wonderful gift and I want him to know I feel that way and feel your love through me. Getting hot-headed is surely not going to do that.

Through September, I am using readings from The Power of a Praying Wife for my SOAP devotionals. If you would like to join in the reading, the schedule I am using is here.

  1. Thank you so much for recommending this book. I am reading along with you, and it has really touched my heart. Being respectful is something I need to work on too, but it helps me to know I am not alone in working on this skill!

  3. This is so true!! We all need to take a look at how we really treat each other. I think we become too comfortable with family and friends, sometimes, that we forget to treat them with the same dignity and respect as we do strangers.

Great post! I often treat my husband the worse….taking everything out on him, when he is the most supporting of me! Thanks for the reminder…The popular quote by Maya Angelou
“If you have only one smile in you, give it to the people you love. Don’t be surly at home, then go out in the street and start grinning Good morning at total strangers.”
I love it and I think it applies to this!
    Thanks!

OUCH! Isn’t this a lesson we could all use… it’s so applicable in many situations.

  6. I really appreciate your post. This NJG (Nice Jewish Girl) could use a reality check in that department once in a while too.
    Miss you.
    Love,
