Thoughts on observing the Sabbath

Today I had a tough time finding one verse from the reading to focus on.

So instead I am going to expand on a comment I received about my SOAP entry on the Sabbath.

My commenter asked a few specific questions in honoring the Sabbath. Should I travel? Is it okay to watch football?

My uneducated, very simple answer is this:

My plan is to use that to day to relax more. I would like to set it aside to stop, recharge and enjoy the blessings I have been given. I am not going to get caught up in the legalistic side of what is okay and what is not, and I’m not going to limit myself to only ‘holy’ activities for the day. Instead I am just going to make a concerted effort to NOT use that day to get caught up, but instead to relax and be thankful.

Yes, I will probably drive, cook, make phone calls, discipline my children and do a few chores as needed. But I am going to make an effort not to do laundry, major cleaning, reorganization of the kitchen cabinets (or whatever) and those sorts of things.

And I’ll pray about it and see how that goes.

I believe God has been telling me over the past few days that I need to relax and recharge. I have been praying about getting everything done and He has responded with messages about rest. He designed a perfect system… we are at relax one day a week. And by looking past that gift and trying to be more productive by ‘working’ 7 days a week, I am violating His plan and becoming less productive.

So, that’s my take: No specific rules. Just a new approach.

As I am moving into new territory, I am curious here as to what any of you might think or have experienced.

I’m linking this to Finer Things Friday because I think that the Sabbath is truly a gift from God… and that observing it will certainly be a Finer Thing!

I am curious… Do you observe the Sabbath? Or not?  And how? Please share.

Thank you so much for your post. I came on here because I have a problem that I am trying to sort out concerning the Sabbath. I am new to the Georgia area and my daughter is 4 years old. I wanted to place her in cheerleading, soccer, etc.. Something where she will meet other girls her age and get some good exercise. All of the activities I have found thus far are on Saturday mornings from 9am till 12pm, which is the exact times of our Sabbath service. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

  2. I absolutely need to prepare better for RESTING on Sunday. I can’t rest if the house is a disaster, but I should kick it in gear on Saturday to rest on Sunday.

  3. Amy,

We’re Torah observant, so of course we observe Sabbath. However, we’ve been struggling with the “dos and don’ts” as well. It seems no matter how hard we try to follow the old ways of observing it, they simply don’t seem to work with society today.

We’re praying specifically about my husband’s “craft business” for a lack of something better to call it. He makes and plays Native American flutes (we’re also members of a local Cherokee tribe), but most places he could sell them would be over the weekend which would include selling on Sabbath. So far, we’re simply stuck.

Thank you for your blog, I’ve just started reading it and am delighted by it. Blessings!!

  4. The Sabbath is definitely a finer thing! I find that simply RESTING is hard work! Thank you for the fresh perspective!

  5. I think you’re right on in this. I try to use it as a day to rest and relax more than I do on the other days. It may look different from person to person and I think there is danger is making up leagalistic rules to follow…Jesus cautioned against this himself. God is more concerned with our heart and our motives than the rules that we are trying to follow.
