Visiting the Finger Lakes wine region of New York

Last Thanksgiving I took my family on a wine adventure in the Finger Lakes region of New York.

When we first decided on the trip, I wasn’t sure what to expect. In the wine stores here in the suburbs of Houston you can’t find many Finger Lakes wines and the manager at my local grocery store laughed at me when I asked if he had any New York wines. But I knew I had to go visit and check out the region for myself.

After our dates were set and I was interviewing Jacob Fairchild of Max’s Wine Dive, he told me about the passion he had seen in the Finger Lakes winemakers he had met, and I knew I was on to something.

Then I heard a National Public Radio interview with Evan Dawson talking about his book Summer in a Glass: The Coming of Age of Winemaking in the Finger Lakes, which profiled Finger Lakes winemakers, and I knew the trip would be amazing. I ordered a copy of the book, devoured every page, and counted the days to takeoff.

What did I find in the Finger Lakes?

I found flavors in Rieslings I never knew could be there. I found people friendly enough to invite strangers into their home for Thanksgiving dinner. I found some delicious and memorable wines that I would like to be able to buy regularly way out here in the suburbs of Houston. Oh, and yes, we found some great adventures for the whole family to enjoy, as well.

I had a feeling the Finger Lakes would be special and my trip cemented that idea.

Click back tomorrow and I’ll share the details of our adventures in the Finger Lakes with you.

If you just can’t wait until then, though, head over to MomsTravelTales, my site about family travel, where I shared about our spontaneous trip to the Jell-O museum while we were on the way to the Finger Lakes. You didn’t know there was a Jell-O museum? Yeah, me neither, until we saw the billboard…

  3. There is NY Wine in Houston? Is there any in Dallas? I live in Dallas and have for the past 24 years. I moved back to Upstate NY last year for about a year to take care of my father. There are many fabulous wineries along Seneca Lake up out of Watkins Glen — on both sides of the lake. I have never seen NY Wines in Dallas. I do miss that area. Upstate New York is absolutely beautiful!

  6. So glad you had a chance to visit the Finger Lakes Region. As you probably found, there are so many wineries here it may take you more than one trip to visit them all. Can’t wait to read about your finds!

I live here in Houston, but grew up between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes in a little town called Romulus and my wife is from Seneca Falls. The dry Rieslings are my favorite, and you can get one of them in Houston at the Spec warehouse on Smith. Glad you enjoyed upstate, it is a hidden gem.

What a beautiful place to grow up! The people were so friendly and the lakes were gorgeous… and that was in November! I cannot even imagine what summer must be like.
I need to head into the downtown Spec’s soon.

  8. Welcome to the wonderful world of Finger Lakes wine! You can find several bottles of Dr. Konstatin Frank wines at Spec’s in downtown Houston, as well as at The Tasting Room. We occasionally see a bottle on a menu around town (Kata Robata, benjy’s) as well. So glad you enjoyed exploring the tastes of the Finger Lakes. It’s always a treat to go home & sip the local wines. Hopefully out-of-state distribution will continue to grow.

Looking forward to reading more about your New York wine experience… like who knew they made wine in New York???

  10. I just started reading your wine blog a few weeks ago. Wish I had found it sooner! I live in PA, but we are on the border and visit the Finger Lakes all the time. I Love their wines. It’s disappointing when we travel because mostly only the local restaurants carry their wines. Hopefully that will change soon.
