Scripture: 1 Timothy 5:9-10
9No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband, 10and is well known for her good deeds, such as bringing up children, showing hospitality, washing the feet of saints, helping those in trouble and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds.
Observation: Women who have become widows are to be cared for by the church, provided they do not remarry and have established a good reputation which points to the fact that they will continue a life of service to the church.
Application: Although this lists guidelines for the care of widows, I think it is something to be used even not as a widow. I pray so often for discernment and guidance in setting my priorities. Here is something I can measure my “to-do” list against. However, I still need to ask for more guidance… this is a pretty big list and I’m sure I could find a way to twist lots of things to fit… especially in the hospitality department.
Prayer: Lord, please guide me in measuring the importance of my “to- do” list. Help me to weed out the stuff you know doesn’t need my focus and only do the things you know are important. I want to bring up my children in a way honoring to you. I want to show hospitality that flows from you alone. I want to help and serve other believers, just as you did on earth. I want to give help where I should and do good deeds, not keep myself idle, wasting time on useless things. Show me your “to-do” list for me. And please, empower me to do it.
