What were you like as a first time mom? Share and win!

I’ve just returned home from visiting a dear friend of mine, her husband and their sweet, six-week-old first-born.

She seems to have transitioned right into motherhood beautifully. She is calm, patient, and in awe of her little angel. She is almost the perfect picture of butterflies and sunshine motherhood and I was amazed!

Motherhood and I didn’t take to each other so easily. I was frustrated, tired, confused and, unfortunately, new-motherhood convicted me as to how selfish I was.

It was tough for me to make the transition and I’m so glad I lived to tell the tale… and then grow to have more children and enjoy them more and more.

So here’s where I am curious: There was a time that I thought all those butterflies and sunshine stories of first motherhood were all fairy tales told to keep us procreating. Now I see that there are some moms who actually DO have that experience. And now that I’m coming to believe those stories to be true, I am amazed and curious.. and filled with wonder.

So, in honor of Mother’s Day this Sunday, I’d like the opportunity to hear lots of stories of first motherhood. (And I’ll even entice you to share with the chance of a prize.)

What was it like for you the first time around? This could be your when you first found out you were pregnant, when it finally felt like the adoption would happen, when you delivered your baby, when you met her/ him for the first time and brought her/ him home. Or much later… a special (or not so special) moment when you KNEW, you had become a mom.

So we can all hear about your tales, please write a post on your own blog and link up or share your story in the comments. And I promise to add mine by Friday.

***Opps! Didn’t get it done in time. But it is posted now. Click here to read it. ***

This will only be as much fun as the stories we share and get to read, so Tweet about it, talk about it and ask other moms to participate, too.

Plus, to further entice you, one extra-blessed mom who links up here by midnight Friday, May 8, will receive a copy of Lisa Whelchel’s “Taking Care of the Me in Mommy” and a plumeria glycerin soap and foot brush I picked up in Maui so you can steal a few moments and luxuriate in your mommy-ness.

Please link up girls… inquiring mommy minds want to know!

YIKES! My Mr. Linky has disappeared! It is in the code, yet not showing up! Leave a comment or send me an email with your link… unless, of course Mr Link shows up again in which case you can link yourself.

Here are a few links I knew we had before the widget left:

Sylvia’s unforgettable tale of trip to McDonald’s with toddler and newborn. Yikes!

My Mom’s story

Sherri, mom of 2

And don’t forget to read the comments… there are some stories, there, as well.

This post is linked to Family Friday.

Green, definitely Green! Let’s see, we decide to build a home while I was pregnant. We put our house on the market and it sold in one week. We spent the last 3 months of my pregnancy living with my parents. But worse than that, it took us those 3 months to get all of our paperwork done to even start building! 2 days after 25 hrs in labor, I have to go sign papers so they can start building our home. We lived with my parents for the first 4 months of Bailey’s life. First child, first grandchild on both sides… we did everything wrong! Over protective, constantly holding him, letting him sleep in our bed, gave up breast feeding after the first few months… it’s sometimes hard to reflect back on that time. Over 10 years later and him standing almost eye to eye with me, I only try to think about the young man he will soon become. One thing is for sure, he totally prepared me for baby number 2. I guess that’s why God blessed us and challenged us by giving us the twins! Being a first time mother has got to be one of the hardest things we women will ever do. I simply reflect on all that I learned from my wonderful grandmother and everything I continue to learn from my amazing mother. Big shoes to fill, but I thank God for the challenge and for my 3 amazing blessings!

  4. I am having a tough time right now with little girl, so i don’t think I’m the best person to write a “first time mom” post. :) Oh well. This too shall pass.

  6. I’ll be writing a post and linking up on Thursday. I can’t wait to read them all!

  7. The moment I found out I was expecting… I became a mother for the first time– my whole world had changed in a blink…(pregnancy tests should really get more credit… they truly are the “first” to tell you the news) I was suddenly taking care of and responsible for a new life… and I was instantly flooded with all of the emotions that come with this new role…joy, fear, love, excitement, anticipation, worry… did I mention worry? I now know where moms before me have been, I know the worry never ends.

The pregnancy wasn’t easy – although feeling a new life move inside of you is a feeling like no other and hearing that sweet heart beat for the first time – incredible! — and the delivery was even more of an adventure.. but the moment they placed my new baby girl in my arms – the world just stopped – and all the pain and fear that I had endured just melted away as I touched her face for the first time.. and I never felt closer to God than at that moment. I saw His love for me in my daughter – and I felt so privileged that he gave such a beautiful gift to my husband and me to love, care for, teach and grow.

I am so thankful for such an amazing blessing — and I have found no greater happiness than to have watched her blossom over these past nine months. Although, transitioning to motherhood has not been easy – leaving a job to be a stay-at- home mom, missing the interaction with friends and favorite co-workers, but I couldn’t think of a better “job” in the world. I feel very lucky to be able to stay home with her. It took me about 4 months to really gain some confidence, but I have been lucky to have so many wonderful mom-friends, friends, my own Mom and mother-in-law – and especially my husband, to help me get through the most difficult times – and easily forgive my frustrations.

When I do get overwhelmed though, I just remind myself of those moments when I find myself gazing into her eyes and cherishing that sparkle when she discovers something new or falling in love with her all over again every time she wakes up and smiles at you or holding her in my arms while she sleeps. I know the time will pass quickly – it already has… but I will never forget the moments I learned that I was going to be a mother and then finally meeting my daughter – they are permanently imprinted on my heart.

I know I’m a newbie at mommyhood and I know there will be challenges ahead – but I look back at what I have accomplished as a mother so far and I’m pretty amazed that I have “it” in me. I just take it a day at a time, get through the hard times, learn to ask for help and treasure all of those special moments. I look forward watching her grow and I can only hope that I am the kind of mother that my mom has been to me.

It was about six weeks before my due date. I had a scheduled appointment with my OB/GYN. Sitting in the waiting room, waiting for my appointment, my back hurt and I felt horrible. When the nurse called the name of a less-pregnant woman, I surprised myself by beginning to cry. The nurse was sensitive enough to realize there was something out-of-the-ordinary about my routine appointment. She took me to an examining room and my doctor came in immediately. He put his hand on my huge distended abdomen and asked, “Don’t you feel that?” I didn’t. I was experiencing “back labor” and the only thing I felt was back pain. The doctor called my husband and sent us straight to the hospital. At the hospital a nurse came into the labor room and placed a stethoscope on my abdomen. She made a large X on my stomach with a marker! I said, “what is that?” She replied, “That’s your baby’s heart.” But she kept listening. Then she drew a second X on my stomach. I was 23 years old and as naive as they come. I lay there thinking, “Oh, no! My baby has two hearts!” Thirty nine years later my twins, a son and a daughter, are still the light of my life.

I got confused and linked, thought I was going to write about it there. So, I am writing about it here:)
I have an almost 3 and 5 yr. old and I can honestly say, I just realized and accepted my full role as a mother as of late! I think I finally got the hang of it and I am comfortable in my skin now. It took me a long time, I am also a stay at home mom, so I think I was trying to get the housewife, mom, etc. role. But, I am so happy with my life now, that I have finally come to terms with it all! It just takes so long to accept things and to realize “I am normal”. It is very easy to lose yourself here, but I think I have found an even balance where I can try and make everyone happy, including myself! Doesn’t always happen, but I can accept that too!
    Great give-away and story idea!!!!

  11. I left a link to a blog post about being a new mom for the second time. :) It was definitely a new experience! :)
