Today’s Psalm was also yesterday’s Psalm. I read it and pondered (there’s that word again) and returned to it today.
The overall message of the Psalm, I believe, is that we should share what the Lord has done with our children so those coming after us will also know of His power and provision.
The last verse, though, is what stood out to me in my first reading of the Psalm this morning, and it is what continues to call out to me.
Here’s what I heard in Psalm 78 using SOAP:
Scripture: Psalm 78: 72
With upright heart he shepherded them
and guided them with his skillful hand.
Observation:
Even through all of their misdeeds, as outlined in almost all of the 71 verses preceding this one, God still loved his people and then shepherded and guided.
That’s a lot of patience, even after the frustration he had to have felt.
Application:
Parenting is hard stuff. And it can be pretty thankless at times.
Over the past few days I’ve been holding my tongue more times than I like to do, but I know I need to. (And yes, I’ve probably let it slip a few too many times, too.) I need to sit tight, let some things roll, and then, for the things that need to be addressed, I need to approach them in a careful, measured way. This is not easy for me.
Today’s reading reminded me that I am not alone in this struggle. Our Father deals with it every single day, as well. He knows how to make it through. He can strengthen me, if I call on him for help and then listen and follow. Sometimes that help, though, will likely be reminder to just sit tight, pray, stay calm and wait. That’s not the easiest of guidance to take.
Parenting is tough stuff. He’s been there. He’s got me, provided I lean on Him.
Prayer:
Lord, I sure need you. I need patience that can only come from you. I need understanding that can only come from you. Please, Lord, show me how to parent with an upright heart and skillful hand. Help me to understand which things to correct and also show me how to correct. Show me what to let slide. Please, Lord, in both instances, grant me calmness and assurance so that I can keep my cool and keep to your path.
Thank you for this reminder that you understand my pain and that you will guide me.
