Bible in 90 Days: Granting a listening vs. reading exception

I get a lot of frustrated comments from people wanting to listen to their reading instead of read their Bible in 90 Days reading for themselves. Believe me, I understand that this is a tough challenge that takes more than dedication. And it is not for everyone at every chapter of her life. I might sound tough, but I am taking my cues from the Bible in 90 Days ministry.

Earlier this week, though, I got an email that I thought I should share in the event someone else is out there in the same boat:

Dear MomsToolbox,

I read in today’s check in that we are supposed to be reading and not
listening. I have been mostly listening because my eyes just don’t
work right. I have MS and cataracts and often words jump all over the
page. I just wanted to be open about this! I sit in my chair with the
audio on and close my eyes to focus on the words. It can become quite
a time of worship!

Thank you for all you put into this for us!!

Here is an excerpt of what I shared with Glenda:

Dear Glenda,
We can definitely grant you an exception.

I take my cues from the Bible in 90 Days ministry and so often participants want to listen instead of read because of lack of perceived time. Then, when those who are struggling to make that time read that others are listening in the car, or while doing chores, it can discourage those who are fighting the battles to use the time to read.

From your email I understand that you are fighting your own other battles and this is one you should not have to fight, as well. I am glad you shared your story with me and I am glad you didn’t decide to throw in the towel because of the rule….

Sweet MomsToolbox Bible in 90 Days readers,

Please understand that this program was not put in place to frustrate you, but to help you in reading, attentively, every word of the Bible. It is a challenge. It is not easy. It is not for everyone at every time in her life. But it is so worth it. If time is keeping you from reading, then you need to make time if you would like to accomplish this goal. If it a physical ailment, exceptions can definitely be granted.

Please stay strong and read, read, read with us if you physically can.

And if you need an exception, take one. Let your mentor or me know. And we will also pray for your healing.

In love,

  1. What I don’t understand is WHEN did I make reading His Word and/or praying something I had to MAKE time for in my day. I mean, I do not go to sleep at night without kissing my kids and my husband good night so why do I not start my day with time spent with God? He gave me 24 hours and I somehow feel that it is ok to maybe give Him a few minutes of MY day. I think of the song and I have to say, “Lord, I’m sorry for thing I’ve made it.”
