A special dessert for a lady party… and my family

A special dessert for a lady party... and my family

While I was cutting angel food cake, whipping cream and washing berries to make a trifle yesterday, my son came up to me.

“Is this for dessert?” he said, expectantly.

“Oh, honey,” I said, “This is for my lady party. I’m going to have dinner with some friends tonight.”

And then the gravity of my ‘lady party’ hit me. We were gathering to honor the memory of a dear friend who had been taken by a bolt of lightning 10 years ago.

I thought about how little time we may have and how I do not want my children to feel like guests or friends are more important than they are.

I only had one trifle bowl (Actually I don’t even have that. I was  borrowing it from another friend) but I remembered a pewter tray in the cabinet and made the kids their own similar dessert to enjoy with dad.

They felt special for having such an indulgent dessert without a special occasion and I was happy to see them smile.

And all it took was a fun serving dish and a few extra moments to arrange the berries, cake and whipped cream. I might just do that again, even when I’m not making a dessert for a lady party.

Berries and Cream Trifle

1/2 of an angel food cake

2 cups strawberries, cut into quarters

1/2 cup raspberries

1/2 cup blueberries

1 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

sugar to taste

dark chocolate bar

1. Slice the angel food cake into 1″ cubes and arrange on the bottom of a trifle bowl.

2. Whip the whipping cream until the texture of whipped cream, adding sugar to taste as you go.

3. Spread the quartered strawberries over the angel food cake layer.

4. Spread a thin layer of whipped cream over the strawberries.

5. Layer the raspberries and blueberries next.

6. Add a final layer of whipped cream.

7. Shave chocolate from the chocolate bar on top.
