B 90 Days Day 17 SOAP: How could they forget?

Today’s Reading: Joshua 15:1- Judges 3:27

Scripture: Judges 2:10

After that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up, who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.

Observation:

After all that fighting and clearing of the land and even altar-building and listening to the Lord and doing as He commanded, the next generation knew nothing of the Lord and what He had done for them.

Application: Yesterday I asked you to share with me what your stones of remembrance are. I wanted to know how you remember the Lord’s gifts and blessings.

Today’s reading reminds me how important it is to grow and build a strong relationship with the Lord and to explain to my children how critical that relationship is.

God did much for the Israelites and yet within one generation they forgot his gifts and teachings… or else they simply chose an ‘easier’ route which certailny led to more trouble.

Prayer:

Lord, I never want to forget your glory, your love and your power. Please, Lord, keep me within your grasp, within your embrace, and show me how to share this with the next generation and those of this generation who do not know you in the way you want to be remembered and revered.

You are an all-powerful, amazing God. And, thankfully you are a patient, deeply-loving God, too. Please don’t let any more generations forget. And help this generation to see you and experience you and serve you  in a way that is truly honoring to you alone.

We talk with our daughters (probably more with the youngest one–she is 5) about God and His story and how we are to love and honor all that He has done for us and how we can show our love to Him. So true that this generation has not learned or know God as they should.

    Same scripture…
Such an important reminder not to let the faith of our children happen by chance….

  3. i have been part of this bible reading challenge now for three days and i believe the Lord will see me through , i dont have a group yet, and what i did was to join in on the current days reading thats day 15, while i still try to catch up on the backlog. while i was reading todays scriptures i saw the new generation of Isrealites as being at fault for forgetting but now i realise the sceipture actually points more tous as parents and our roles in passing on our beliefs and convictions in the Lord to our children. Thank you so much for this.

  4. A great question Amy…How COULD they forget. One I have found myself asking over and over when I’ve read other books of the old Testament as well. But one thing that stood out to me in recent readings is how in OT times, the words of God have to be read to the people and God even instructs them to gather to hear the reading of His words at specific times, to be sure they remember. In Chronicles (yes???) I remember reading once how a king finds these words and realizes they had not been read to the people in a long time…and so he reads them and sees how he has been disobedient all these years…out of ignorance.
ANYway… today’s reading just brought all of that to mind for me and re-emphasizes for me how important it is to stay in His word daily lest we too like Eve should be led astray (and quickly forget) [1 corinthians 11:3]
I’m up to date on reading but behind on blogging so I’m still blogging about past readings, but interestingly yesterday I pondered how what God does today is to be used for His testimony in the future and to be aware so that our children will see Him as Lord in our words and actions for their future edification. I LOVE how God keeps saying the same thing over and over throughout the bible!! Hmmm…could it be that we need that constant reiteration *grin*

    Let us always remember!

  7. I’m finally caught up in the reading, thank you so much for your prayers and messages of encouragement. Normally, when I fall behind I toss the towel in, but by God’s grace I stuck through it and have managed to read from Numbers – today’s reading in just 2 days!

After today’s reading I felt even more convicted to not only pour into the lives and faith of my own children, but to make a serious investment in the lives of today’s youth. I volunteer in a few programs at my church, but am realizing a few hours of faith in action a week is not enough to build a solid foundation in the Lord. How important is it for this generation to see faith lived out day to day through thick and thin, the good, bad, and ugly? I’m going to be much more intentional in connecting with the youth I’m involved with from now on!

      AMEN! AMEN! AMEN!
      (just one wasn’t enought. LOL)

  8. Amazing how quickly the benefit of the Lord is forgotten, isn’t it?

  9. This is the same Scripture I looked at for my SOAP today. It is amazing that in only one generation, that much could be lost. :(

  10. Yikes! I forgot to check in on Monday. Sorry. So far so good. I used one grace day when my in-laws where here. I stayed up too late talking to my MIL and just couldn’t get that days reading back. Other than that I’m on track!

    Hi there,

I think the scripture is wrong above – Joshua 2:10? Did you mean Judges 2:10? :-) :-)

My pastor recently said that the reason the generations in America have declining church attendance and religious identification is that ‘each generation assumed too much’. He exhorted us to NOT assume that because our kids were in church and youth group they automatically know God, but to be purposeful in passing down our faith. I thought that was awesome!

  12. Isn’t that just heartbreaking! They didn’t pass on what God did for them to their children.
