I admit it: Being a mom is a lot more challenging than I ever expected it to be.
Throughout my first pregnancy, I really thought that being a mom through the baby years would be butterflies and sunshine, with late nights and early mornings, and a few hiccups along the way, but nothing too major. That’s what all of the pregnancy magazines told me.
And then I became a mom and got tired, frustrated and hung up an many of the wrong things. I found myself falling into all sorts of traps.
Be the Mom, a new book by Tracey Lanter Eyster, identifies 7 “mom traps” like the the “Just a Mom” trap, the “Busy Mom” trap and “Martyr Mom” trap and shares practical advice for breaking out of them, and enjoying mom life much more, by pointing us right back to our Father and His words and guidance.
Earlier this year I had the opportunity to share a lunch with Tracey at Blissdom, a blogging conference, and we talked about real life, real struggles and real parenting. She’s the mom of two kids much older than my own and I felt like I was talking with a mom who had been there, had the battle scars as well as all the joys and wanted to share her experiences in a positive encouraging way.
After lunch I felt refreshed, encouraged and truly blessed by the experience. I had shared my own battle scars and laughs and she assured me where I needed to be assured and challenged me where I needed to be challenged.
Be the Mom is very much like that conversation. Tracey walks you through traps that entangle moms and, without being preachy, shares her own experiences in each of those traps and practical ways to get right out of them. She even offers reflection exercises at the end of each chapter to see where your trouble spots might be and where you are rocking and rolling.
I was given a copy of Be the Mom earlier this month to review and share with you and I am thankful for that, as I intend to implement several of the ideas she shared in my own family.
The book’s subtitle says “Overcome attitude traps and enjoy your kids” I can honestly say this book guides moms in doing just that. It can be easy to get caught up in worldly traps and Tracey gently reminds us to look toward the Bible for direction, sharing scripture and applying it to everyday mom life.
