Bible in 90 Days: The beginning of a new chapter (and an ending)

“When is a new Bible in 90 Days session starting?”

Today I awoke to a text from a friend with that question, a question I used to love answering, but have come to dread over the past few weeks, as things have been changing.

I had been avoiding answering that question for several weeks for fear of people’s responses and disappointment in me. With every Facebook message, email and comment I would cringe inside, and try my best to smile.

Now I am ready to tell you. I honestly do not know when the next Bible in 90 Days session is starting because I will not be hosting it on MomsToolbox.

Yes, you read that right.

MomsToolbox will not host the next session of Bible in 90 Days.

It is time for me and the Bible in 90 Days ministry to pass that challenge of hosting on to each and every one of you. It is your turn to take the Bible in 90 Days to the next group of readers.

But don’t worry, we are not leaving you on your own.

Let me go back and explain a bit.

I first made the decision not to host again back in October at the Savvy Blogging Summit. I approached John Saddington of Tent Blogger to ask him how I could set up the B90 program on my site better so it could run better.

We talked about my challenges and he looked at me and said “It’s time to stop.”

“What?!” I said. “I can’t.”

“Why not?” he said.

“Because it changed my life and it has changed thousands of other lives,”I said.

“And it is time to let it go,” John said. “He tells us His burden is to be light, and it isn’t light anymore is it?”

“No,” I said and choked back tears.

And that’s when I felt that electric jolt through my body as if God was saying “Listen to him, Amy. I am speaking through him.” I wiped away tears, but also knew he was right.

“So what’s next?” I asked.

“First you pray. Then maybe you get all your resources together and put it on another site and release it. Let it go,” he answered.

I cried some more and knew that he was right.

We finished our meeting and, to be honest, I felt lighter, better, relieved.

I walked down the hall and told my sister in law that I had just had the most amazing, unexpected meeting. Then she introduced me to three women standing with her as her sister in law, Amy of MomsToolbox, and they all said

“OH! The Bible in 90 Days lady! What did he tell you? You are glowing, so it had to have been good.”

And I started crying again.

I explained what had just happened, but asked them to keep it a secret.

When we finished talking, another blogger, a Bible in 90 Days grad, walked up and gave me a hug and someone else walked up and asked when the next session would start.

“I’m not sure,” I said and smiled.

Friends, I have been the Bible in 90 Days lady for awhile and I’ve absolutely enjoyed it, but it is time for me to move on. I haven’t been able to immerse myself in any other studies or share them with you because I’ve had the Bible in 90 Days on my brain for three years (Well, actually for more than 10 years, but in a different way.) This session I stopped reading and finally jumped into a different devotional but was afraid to talk about it on MomsToolbox because I didn’t want to give anyone who hadn’t yet read the Bible in 90 days an excuse to stop. But I’ve done the reading. Several times. And I needed to read something else in addition to my Bible this time.

But that’s not where the story ends.

A few weeks ago I mentioned that Ted Cooper, the founder of the Bible in 90 Days ministry, is sick. He has incurable cancer. Without a miracle he is not going to get better.

After my own big decision I was thinking about what the ultimate Bible in 90 Days site would be like, what resources it would hold and I thought about all the great things Ted had created and shared through the years. I wondered if he would let me have access to those things and thought about how all this information really should be housed by the ministry.

Then, about two weeks later, Ted called me to ask if I would create a legacy site for Bible in 90 Days to replace the current ministry site. He wanted it to be a site that had the all the resources and best tips for hosting or participating in a Bible in 90 Days group, but would be self-maintaining. He was stepping down from the ministry soon and the ministry’s future itself was uncertain.

I got that same electricity through me as I had when speaking with John.

I told him I was up for the job and explained what I had been thinking about since my meeting with John.

And so now I am working to create that ultimate, self-maintaining but still evolving Bible in 90 Days site which will house resources for each and every one of you to facilitate your own group in reading the Bible in 90 days, whether that be a group that is formed at your church, in your home, in your community, online, on Facebook or other social media platform, or even at a prison or other location for ministry opportunity.

Yes, you can facilitate the program whether you have read the Bible in 90 Days (or so) or not. You just have to have the commitment to stick to the program for the entire 90 days.

The site will include the reading plan, links to places to buy the resources, best practice tips, encouragement and maybe even a 90-day email newsletter signup for daily encouragement. We’ll even have a spot for finishers to share their Bible in 90 Days stories and inspiration.

I’d love to create a page where groups can post start dates and locations (web and otherwise) so others can see what groups are starting soon to join a group, but I cannot figure out the programming for that.

I’d also like to post a list of finishers, but I cannot find a plug-in to allow people to enter their info and then automatically be added to a list.

I am posting this today for two reasons: I want you to know what is going on and I could use your help.

Initially I wanted to wait until the other site was finished and live to make this announcement so I could send you over to see it. But today, after talking with my husband, it became clear that I should go ahead and tell you about it now. Some of you may have some of the answers I am seeking for programming the site. And some of you may have ideas I could implement in the site to make it even better.

So, friends, dear readers, dedicated mentors, Bible in 90 Days grads and wanna-be grads, this is what is going on. I don’t know when, or even if, I will host the Bible in 90 Days on MomsToolbox again. But I’d love to help you carry the torch to your own circles.

Together with loving volunteers, I have shepherded thousands of you through the entire Bible, and the ministry’s outreach all over the world has shepherded many, many more. We know you can carry the Word to others. We know you can lead groups, guide readers and bring more people to know the whole story by reading every word of the Bible because many of you recognize the value of the Bible in 90 Days program and read the entire Bible because of it.

The new site is scheduled to launch at the end of the month. As I mentioned, I am working diligently to go through all of the ministry’s resources as well as my own to present everything you will need in a format that you can use. If you have any input for that site, I welcome it.

And so now I’m turning Andrea’s text right back to you:

“When is a new Bible in 90 Days session starting?”

December 27, 2012 update:

The new site has not gone live yet, but it should in January.  In the meantime, I will be posting some of its resources here on MomsToolbox very soon to help those of you who want to get a group reading soon. Sit tight and I’ll do my best to share what I can as I can. If you don’t already subscribe to MomsToolbox, consider doing that so you’ll get the updates and tips as I post them.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

  1. When I read about your decision I cringed. I have been reading the Bible through long before this 90 day program came along. Five-year plans, one-year plans, all the way to 45-day plans were quite regular for us. If this is such a strain on you, it doesn’t mean you stop – it means you cut down on the number of streams you have created. Stick with the simple, basic program. To be honest, reading your post reminded me of the people of Israel constantly complaining about this and that – totally ignoring what God had done for them. “Take us back to Egypt! At least we had meat there! What is all the manna?” and on and on. And we are still at it all these thousands of years later, almost like saying “Woe is me! Look at all that I have done!” Believe me, I am in no way coming down on you! Not at all! I am just pleading with you to reconsider. John’s advice to you was immature. Don’t stop, just streamline. Don’t make the Bible something with which to conflict, but rather to incorporate.

    1. Thanks for your input. And I appreciate your thought.

I’m not stopping in reading the Bible, I’m just not going to lead groups through the B90 program here on MomsToolbox anymore. Instead I’m joining forces with the ministry to create resources so others can lead their own groups better.

And I’ll keep sharing my (almost) daily devotions on whatever read through or study of the Bible I’m doing here, just as I have for more than 5 years. I streamlining by doing the readings and studies I am now feeling led to do, while still giving everyone the tools to do B90 as it is their time to do it.

Wow. I just read this post and WOW Amy I know how you feel too. I had to let a weekly article go from my site recently and did so with a heavy heart, but I have known for quite a while that it is time. I’m so glad that I connected with you the very first time through and that we got to meet at Relevant! What God has done with my little group of 18 high school, college & youth staffers from 2 years ago is nothing short of amazing. B90 has spread from you to a youth ministry small group, to four states, 9 churches and over 100 finishers last year just from my little group the year before. This year, it’s even bigger. God is SO good and He’s carrying this in waves all over. Thank Ted and thank you for answering the call! :)

  3. it was great to meet you and i’m glad i could give you a little help along the way. :)

    1. Thank you, John. I really appreciate your wisdom.

  4. If I needed someone to punch up my Bible in 90 Days website, you would be number 1 on the list. I can’t wait to see it.

    1. Thank you so much, Karen. I really appreciate that.

  5. Amy, I am so proud of you. God bless you and your family as you’ve handled this program with such grace. You dear sister are a keeper. ;) I want to make a suggestion and answer your closing question.

Suggestion: Have you considered using Linky for people to add themselves to a list of finishers? This instead of a plugin.

My Answer: I plan to start again in January. We’d read the bible cover to cover in 90 days. Then read the bible again much slower and have discussions about the reading.

    1. Thank you, Dana.
Yes, I’ve considered a linky, but to have text show up it must be linked to something and not all readers have sites. I want to be able to allow people to add their names without a link. This has been quite a puzzle.

  6. While reading through the Bible, you were often on my mind and I wondered how you could possibly manage leading the 90-Day read-through, for so long. It has obviously required a lot of personal and family sacrifices, over the years, and we have received tremendous benefit from your obedience. More important than what we do “for Christ” is the ability to discern what God is saying to us, about our own times and seasons. Many of us become so busy working “for” God that we lose ground in the area of our sensitivity to his gentle promptings. Amy, you have done well in your seasons, and have provided excellent leadership. Through your release now, the vision is enlarged and the Read-Thru ministry reach becomes even greater. New leaders are raised up to take the ministry even further than you could imagine. Most importantly, God has released you! He has released you into your new season, because there are others already waiting, where God next leads you. Thank you for your obedience: it’s a testimony and a blessing!

    1. Thank you, Lynda. I really appreciate that. It was a sacrifice, and one I enjoyed and fortunately had my husband’s support with. But now it is time to share the journey with others.

  7. I’m so proud of you for listening to a very clear message and going forward with what you know to be best for you and the challenge. I want to encourage you that this is a good thing. Last year I felt the desire to start the challenge but my timing was off and you didn’t have one going on at the time. I started a Facebook page, invited my friends and we all read together. If someone like me can lead a group of readers, anyone can. I remember being a bit worried at the time, branching off on my own and using your reading schedule, hoping not to step on any toes. Thank you for opening this up wide so that everyone will feel comfortable using the tools available for this incredible challenge. You have already touched the lives of ao many through your efforts and I know this will be blessed and continue to bless so many more. Thank you!

    1. Thank you. And I am so thankful you pulled a group together and read His word. :) Beautiful!

  8. I really appreciate you hosting the Bible in 90 Days and am so glad I had the opportunity to participate. It was definitely life changing.
I know it’s hard to let go – I’ve had to do it myself – but we are rarely called to do one thing forever! So glad you received some wise counsel and are moving on to a new opportunity. Best wishes and thanks again for hosting.

  9. It sounds like you are taking Jesus’ example and “commissioning” this to others now! Good for you! Because of you hosting this on your blog back in 2009, I have read the Bible through 3 times with this program. And this fall I have led our church in the Bible in 90 Days class! It’s been amazing to see how God has been working through the B90Days program and your blog! Thanks for your hard work. Can’t wait to see what you are up to next.

    1. I love reading this, Nicole! Thank you!!

  10. Amy – I can only imagine how hard this has been – but at the same time the release too. :) You have given countless hours of your time to inspire and motivate others, and you are exactly right – it’s time to extend it out. I don’t have any suggestions for the new site, but I’m praying for you as you all pull it together and create an incredible resource for others. Thank you so much for all that you have done {and are still doing!}.

    1. Thanks, Jolanthe. And thank you for all you have done to help.

  11. This made me sad and happy at the same time. Thankful for this site, for your work the last few years. It was life changing for me and others! I am looking forward to doing it again in the future through this new site. Thank you so much Amy and team of B90Days peeps that made this possible.

  12. <3 Love this. This was my first time mentoring and I was wondering when the next one started so I can do it again. Now I don't have to wait, I can start one on my own. :) Thanks for introducing this wonderful reading plan to so many readers. It truly has brought my heart back home where it belongs. Thank you God.

    1. Yay! I am so glad to read this!

  13. Amy,
Thank you for all of your years of commitment to seeing women read the entire Bible for themselves! I can certainly understand your need to pass the torch on and allow God to use you in new areas! I was in your first “graduating class” and will never forget the impact of reading through the Bible in 90 days; you were truly a blessing to me! :)
My husband is a computer programmer; if he can be of any assistance to you, please feel free to contact me!

    Carina Thursby

    1. Thank you so much, Carina!

  14. This is absolutely amazing Amy. I love seeing the way God works in ways we just can’t see. Beautiful story. Love it!

    1. Thank you. It has been quite an adventure.

Amy, where can I get a schedule of the reading without buying the Bible in 90 days Bible?

    1. I’m so glad you asked! :)
You can find links to the Cover to Cover and Chronological plans, as well as other resources here: http://www.momstoolbox.com/blog/bible-in-90-days/I strongly recommend the cover to cover plan for your first time. And get a
few friends to do it with you… You’ll likely need the accountability.

    2. I’m so glad you asked! This page lists links to all sorts of resources, including the Cover to Cover reading plan and Chronological plan: http://www.momstoolbox.com/blog/bible-in-90-days/

  16. How exciting! I love to see the way God works in people – yay, Amy, for being faithful!

  17. Amy, I loved reading about how God spoke to? Isn’t He good and merciful to give us confirmation?? I have been so blessed by your ministry and being introduced to the Bible in 90 days. Thank you for serving Christ – and each of us – through this ministry. I’m praying for you as it all gets sorted out.

    1. Thanks, Candace. And YOU have blessed ME a LOT! Thank you.
