Check back every Monday through Thursday for ideas to have more fun all summer long.
Need more ideas? Try this one to get you set for anytime boredom sets in…
On with today’s idea…
Discovery Green, downtown Houston’s newest park
Our family LOVES Discovery Green! It is a perfect place for frolicking on a
truly unique playground
(That thing on the left in the second picture is like a massive sturdy net. The kids LOVE playing tag in there!!)
splashing in fountains
or having fun taking in a show (movie or live performance), trying out a free class (everything from extreme Wii competitions to Gymboree to Pilates and Zumba… and yes I said FREE), enjoying a picnic (packed or bought at the cafe), racing a rented remote-controlled sailboat on a pond, playing bocce or shuffleboard or even just playing tag or Frisbee. Oh, and Discovery Green even hosts a weekly farmers’ market with yummy, yummy things.
I know, all you suburbanites might be apprehensive to actually try out a downtown location. I am telling you people: Drive on in and you won’t regret it!
This park is super safe (they even have playground monitors to keep the kids and parents playing nicely), parking on the street is not that challenging (and valet is an option at The Grove), the bathrooms are clean and convenient and it really is a fantastic gem.
Check out the Discovery Green calendar to see what might interest you. This summer the Houston Public Library is hosting all types of free events from Young Writer’s Workshops to the Houston Zoomobile and lots more. And did I mention FREE Gymboree on Saturdays??
Plus, you could make a late afternoon of it and enjoy dinner on the rooftop of The Grove if your kids are up for a little grown-up experience in the twinkling lights.
