Day 10 of the New Testament in 40 Days…. and in the overflow

It’s Wednesday. We’re in Luke and it is Day 10, my friends.

Our reading for today, Day 10, is Luke 4-7.

I pray that this is all sounding rather familiar to you as we read this third account and that different parts are striking you in different ways.

Today, Luke 6:45 kept echoing, even after I passed it and even after I finished reading.

“The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.”

Luke 6:45, NIV

For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.

I’ve mulled over that one in the past. It is pulling me still.

I want my words to be life giving…. always. For my words to be life giving, I need to fill myself with life, with truth, with love, so that is what overflows out of me.

Father God, you are truth, you are life, you are love. I want you to rule my life. Please always direct my path. Keep me focused where I need to be. Lift distractions away from you. Thank you for your love, your direction and the opportunity to see you in so many ways. Thank you for reaching out to me, for loving me, for giving me opportunities to fill myself up so much that I overflow with your love. Please, please guide me in that path… and in staying on that path. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thank you, sweet friends, for joining me on this journey.

In love,

  1. One of the things that “reading” these passages as opposed to “studying” them has given me is a small insight into the way that Jesus thinks.

I think of all the self-help gurus and motivational speakers that seem to crop up on my timelines and recommended viewing lists, and see their complex life plans, trademarked processes and systems and expensive courses to help make your life better….

And then I can almost imagine Jesus (who never seems to use 20 words when 2 will do) standing in front of me (and all my journals, self-help books and life plans) and saying – “You don’t need those anymore. Just read the word. And follow me”.

Thanks Amy for this little plan and for helping us to create the space to think about what really matters.

ps. I wrote that note to myself in Luke 8. Luke 9:24? “Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self” !!!

    1. Great observation, Jeremy!
I am so thankful that you decided to jump in and give this a go… and really just READ. :)
