Does Target know you’re pregnant? And what do the other retailers know?

Ever wonder how Target, and no doubt other retailers as well, collect data from us with every transaction and tailor their sales pitches?

In this story on Forbes.com, one father was outraged that his daughter was receiving coupons which were appropriate for a new mom. Little did he know her buying habits had pointed Target to deduce that she was, indeed, pregnant and, to appeal to that customer, they had sent applicable coupons.

So what does this mean for us?

Sure, collecting information about us is spooky, but it also helps us to get the coupons and deals that we want the most.
