Guest Chef Night a.k.a Cooking Lessons

Tonight we started cooking lessons at our house.

Not that I am a great chef or anything but I am a mom and I can cook some things and I think it is my job to teach my kids how to cook.

Last week I got out the calendar and decided that every Tuesday night would be guest chef night (or cooking school), rotating through the kids for a one one-on-one lesson each week.

Then I got out a cookbook designed for kids and asked each child to pick a dinner they would like to prepare and marked them on the calendar for the right night.

This week my oldest, who is eight, made tacos. He sliced tomatoes, lettuce and avocado. He measured spices and sauteed onions and garlic and browned ground beef. He decided what fruits to include in a fruit salad and he chopped and mixed them himself. He did everything or at least did the majority of each step, with me guiding him along the way.

And then, amazingly, everyone ate tomatoes and lettuce on their tacos in my house for the first time EVER.

And everyone asked for seconds and thirds. And my oldest beamed from the praise and asked when he could make tacos again.

I can’t wait for next Tuesday night when I get to cook with my middle guy. I bet it’ll be just as much fun!

  1. Love it! What a fun idea! That’s really funny that everyone tried the tomatoes and lettuce for the first time!

What a great idea!!! Love it!

  3. Our children don’t do enough cooking (yet!), but they sure do eat more tacos and taco salads when they build it themselves! I bet it would taste even better to them if they did all the prep work themselves!

They have eaten more salads in general when they slice up the lettuce and tomatoes… :-)

  4. So fun…we did this with my mom too. We even got to sit in a special chair at the table when it was our night to help cook.

Such small things that could make our day!

Greatest idea since sliced bread! I just love how you come up with these fantastic ideas to help your children learn and grow! What an amazing Mom you are!

  6. Cute idea!! Brandt loves helping me out in the kitchen, but he still doesn’t eat everything he helps with. Some of my favorite memories with one of my grandmothers was cooking at her house.
