Scripture: Luke 5:4-6
4When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deeper water, and let down the nets for a catch.”
5Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you said so, I will let down the nets.”
6When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.
Observation: The men had been busy fishing for quite some time, yet they were not successful at catching anything. Once they received instruction from Jesus, though, and followed it, they caught more fish than the boats could handle.
Application: How often do I come up with some ‘great’ idea and run with it without first praying and asking God’s direction and guidance? Without him, I might achieve worldly success, but by following his guidance I will achieve a much more important success. Following His plan alone, and seeking His guidance in approaching and following that plan, is what will bring the most benefit.
Prayer: Thank you Lord, for this reminder to seek you first, and then act, following your instruction. You will guide me on the ideal path for me. And you will use me… provided I step aside and do your will. Please continue to guide me in stepping aside. I so often want to plow ahead, forgetting to go to you first. Please continue to guide me, and instruct me in being a better listener and follower.
