Memories to Share: August- Memories 35-40

memories-to-share-post

Here we are already back in August. I started thinking about this series last August when my grandmother passed away at age 90 and now, as I type, my mom is likely in her car, driving to visit her aunt, my grandmother’s sister, in her last days. Auntie Ruth is 101 years of age. In those 101 years, Auntie has probably done more for others, with joy in her heart, than anyone else I personally know.

When you would visit Auntie Ruth, you barely had your clothes off of your body to go to bed before she was at work washing and ironing them. My husband and I visited for a funeral a few years ago and didn’t even know she had collected our worn clothes by the time she had already ironed a dress shirt of my husband’s! (She also came up to me when I was alone because she was concerned that his shirt wasn’t as white as it should be and advised me to talk with the dry cleaner before she realized it was actually meant to be a cream shirt and not bright white. I wonder if cream dress shirts were common when she took care of her husband’s shirts for him. I bet not.)

Auntie was an original DIY decorator, showing me pumpkins she had made from dryer hose painted to look like adorable jack o lanterns for Halloween. And this was probably 17 years ago. Her sweet tea was better than Chick-fil-A’s (yes, really) and she always had smiles and stories to share. Auntie Ruth is a special lady and I think her time is coming soon to join her husband, son and sister with Jesus.

Of course this makes my eyes fill with tears as I type, but it also reminds me of the importance of sharing your memories and stories.

I launched Memories to Share to help me, and to help you, in sharing our stories so that they could be enjoyed for generations to come. Please consider printing these posts and recording your memories so others can enjoy them, and also so you can enjoy them as you reflect. Please also discuss these stories with friends and family now so they can hear your voice tell your stories, ask questions and chime in. It is my sincere hope these posts and the free ebook of writing prompts bless you and those who love you and that you love.

On to the prompts for August…

For some of you it may happen in September, but August has always been back-to-school time for me. I l have always loved new school supplies, meeting new teachers, seeing old friends and meeting new ones. I love the freshness and promise of a new school year and I love reflecting back to my first days of school each year, taking pictures and turning left at the mailbox as my dad used to remind me as I walked out of the door the years I rode the school bus. What memories of school and friendships do you have to share?
