Memories to Share: Memory #4

Good morning! I’m sorry I am a bit late in posting this week’s Memories to Share memory prompt. It has been a full couple of days (er, actually months!) with the wine app development, family stuff/general life and my brother deploying to the Middle East last week. Although my brother lives in a different city and I don’t see him much, his deployment has still impacted me greatly. 

Thanks for your supportive email about the series. I am glad it is helping you record, share and learn your family stories. It is my hope this series will guide you in recording family stories and personal memories to share with loved ones, as well as help you to ask others to collect Memories to Share with you someday.

So, on to week #4…

What were some of your favorite books to read as a child?

Here’s a glimpse into the beginning of my story:

Oh my goodness, how I loved to read as a child! I enjoy reading as an adult, too, but found more time to read when I was younger and almost always had a book handy. I devoured books in elementary school where our school had a fantastic duo of librarians. Mrs. Patton had a tough job keeping me in books! I loved the Boxcar Children Mysteries and, of course, Nancy Drew mysteries. I remember very well the day Mrs. Patton told me she thought I was ready for Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson. And I’ll never forget how involved I became with the characters. It was the first book I remember reading that did not have a happy ending– and yet it was so beautiful. I still haven’t seen the movie because I don’t want it to take away from the book’s impressions on me. I also loved anything Louise Fitzhugh’s Harriet the Spy and also, as so many girls of the ’80s, I enjoyed Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume’s books. (I also felt a little on the edge and grown-up with the Judy Blume books.) Oh, and when I needed a dose of silly, there was always Where the Sidewalk Ends.
