Curious about breastfeeding?
If you want to learn more about breastfeeding from the experts and will be in Houston tomorrow, Wednesday, August 17, make plans to stop by and visit the Big Pink Bus at the Children’s Museum of Houston from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
The educational outreach effort is part of a 30-city bus tour sponsored by Milk for Thought, an organization spearheaded by a 27-year-old guy that connects pregnant and breastfeeding moms with local experts, counselors, support groups and baby-friendly hospitals.
Through its Lactation Foundation, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) has jumped on board and will be encouraging new moms to breastfeed their infants by helping host the Big Pink Bus tomorrow.
Visitors to the Big Pink Bus tour tomorrow will get to learn from local experts such as:
Pamela Berens, M.D., professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the UTHealth Medical School, a Fellow of the American Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is a lactation consultant at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. (Dr. Berens is also my doctor. I love her and have the utmost respect for this amazing woman. Basically, she rocks… Just in case you were wondering.)
Alisa Sanders, R.N., board-certified lactation consultant and clinic manager of the Lactation Foundation, part of the UTHealth Department of Pediatrics WIC Program, which offers free services to breastfeeding moms.
Nancy M. Hurst, Ph.D., R.N., director of Women’s Support Services and the Lactation Program and Milk Bank at Texas Children’s Hospital.
According to the 2011 Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding, breast milk is uniquely suited to the human infant’s nutritional needs and a live substance with unparalleled immunological and anti-inflammatory properties that protect against a host of illnesses and diseases for both mothers and children.
The Big Pink Bus will be at the Children’s Museum (1500 Binz, Houtson Texas, 77004) from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011. Speakers begin at 11 a.m.
The Lactation Foundation is part of the UTHealth Medical School’s Department of Pediatrics WIC Program. The center is devoted to nutritionally at-risk women and children. As part of its mission, the center also provides helpful information for the general community and trains WIC staff and other healthcare professionals in breastfeeding management. WIC is a federally funded program designed to improve the health of low- and middle-income mothers and children.
