Scripture: John 10:17-18
17The reason my father loves me is that I lay down my life-only to take it up again. 18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.
Observation: Jesus shows perfect obedience to the Father in all his actions. The Bible tells of many times that Satan tries to tempt him, yet he never succumbs. And here Jesus foretells of his coming death and resurrection. He could have chosen a different path and not have been crucified and not have endured the pain for us. He could have been selfish and not followed God’s command. Instead he endured the pain for those who follow him and then he rose again. And through that act, the price for my sin was paid. How fortunate I am that Jesus chose to serve his master!
Application: Jesus’ perfect obedience enabled Jesus to be used by God for his glory. I cannot be perfect, but through my relationship with Jesus I am forgiven. Because of this I should show my appreciation and follow the example of Jesus’ life in study of the Word, serving others unselfishly, prayer, and listening to and following God’s guidance.
Prayer: Lord, you know I struggle with serving you and serving the world. I want to follow you, but I get distracted. And I am fallen. Thank you for sending your son, who also had free will, but chose to serve you perfectly. Thank you for sending one who chose to lay down his life and endure pain and death that I might have eternal life, even though I make lots of mistakes. Please continue to guide me. Please continue to change my heart as I try to align my priorities with yours. Thank you Lord, for the changes I have already seen, and for the changes that are to come.
