Am I pursuing Him like a treasure? Proverbs 2

If you are reading through the Proverbs in 31 Days with us, today’s (Tuesday’s) reading assignment is Proverbs chapter 2.

Scripture: Proverbs 2:4-5

and if you look for it as for silver

and search for it as hidden treasure,

then you will understand the fear of the Lord

and find the knowledge of God

 Observation:

I can’t expect to gain understanding or a real relationship with God by just sliding by, trying to pick it up here and there. If I want understanding, then I have to put some real effort into pursuing it.

 Application:

A relationship with God is a treasure worth pursuing and I need to treat it as such.

It isn’t something to just be slipped into my life, but something to make time for, something to set as a priority– and truly as a priority, not just thinking, saying or hoping it is.

And here comes the confession:

Today I am reading, praying and writing after dropping the kids at school and before heading into a meeting at church. I was unable to make the time for my devotional before I woke the kids so I thought I’d just slip my SOAP time in this little slot.

Yes, I know… I wasn’t exactly following my own idea from Proverbs 1. But this is just how today went. (And how how thankful I am for grace and forgiveness!!)

And so now I get this.

Hmm.

And I was expecting wisdom? In a fly-by Bible study time?

Well, I got it alright, but what I am hearing is that I need to make ample time. I need to pursue Him as a treasure, not just as a quick task.

Sure, slipping in a bit of study into a packed schedule is a great start. I know that any time spent with Him yields something. But what am I cheating myself out of?

What would this morning been like had I devoted more time? What would it have been like had I started my day with Him as I had intended.

Guess I’ll try again tomorrow.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for being with me and speaking the truth, even if my prayer time was abbreviated this morning. Please help me tomorrow morning to start off properly. Or show me when the best time to meet with you would be.

I want to pursue you as the treasure you are. You know the best way for me to do that so, please, guide me in my pursuit.

Thank you, Lord.

What about you?

What did you hear in your reading today? Or what do you think about what I’ve shared today? I’m glad you are reading with us and would love for you to share in the comments…

  1. I’ve just found your site so I am playing catch-up. I have been looking for an online Bible Study, and I am so glad I found you! I am finding it hard to make time for Him everyday. My family and I are in the middle of moving from Adelaide, South Australia to Hobart, Tasmania. There are so many other things that need to be done that I am really struggling to find enough time in the day to get everything done. Thanks again! God Bless!

“He is a shield to those whose walk is blameless.”

This stood out to me because I know I need Him to be my shield from all evil. Scripture and prayer daily, some days constantly praying for his protection when I feel that I am going down the wrong path, is God’s loving shield in action.
