Today (Thursday) the reading is Proverbs 3. Here is what I heard:
Scripture: Proverbs 3: 5
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.
Observation:
Don’t look at things with your own eyes, but instead trust in God and listen to what He has to say about them.
Application:
Yesterday I was fortunate enough to hear someone share two stories of giants in the Bible.
In one of the stories, which is told in Numbers 13 and 14, God promises land to the Israelites, yet when the people send scouts to check out the land before taking it, the report comes back that there are giants in the land and the people become afraid. They listen to the scout report of the bad things and forget that God had already promised them the land. So rather than taking what was promised to them, they ran in fear.
The other story she shared was that of David and Goliath which you can find in 1Samuel 17.
In this story, Goliath, a giant, has been taunting the Israelites to come fight him.
David, who is not a warrior, faces Goliath, armed with a few stones and faith in God. He doesn’t even wear protective armor! Proclaiming the name of the Lord, David takes his shot, throws a stone and kills the massive giant.
In the first story, the Israelites leaned on their own understanding and did not trust in God and suffered as a result. In the second story, David faces seemingly terrible odds, yet knows he is to kill Goliath. He leans not on his own understanding, but instead trusts in God and is victorious.
Does trusting in God mean I will always get what I want and emerge, in my mind, as victorious? No.
But trusting in God and proceeding in faith will allow God’s plan to unfold without me getting in the way.
When things look hairy and scary, I need to lean on Him, listen to Him and follow Him. Relying on my own human understanding could get me in trouble. But true faith and listening to God’s direction will always keep me on the right track.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for this reminder to lean on you. So often I want to plow through and get things done without stopping to check in with you as to what your plans might be.
Please guide me in doing a better job of leaning on you and listening to you. With you, I can prosper in the best ways. Without you…. Yikes!
