SOAP: Hearing from God

Scripture:

1 Samuel 3: 1

…Now in those days messages from the Lord were very rare, and visions were quite uncommon.

1 Samuel 3:7

Samuel did not yet know the Lord because he had never had a message from the Lord before.

Observation: Samuel, like most at the time, had never heard from the Lord, as this comes from the Old Testament, way before the Holy Spirit came along. And when the Lord was speaking to Samuel, he did not recognize it at first.

Application: We are so blessed to have the Holy Spirit’s guidance, if we ask for it! He wants to be in us and He wants to guide us. We just have to ask and then listen.

I have had friends ask me how I hear God. For me, it is often a gentle leading, yet I have also had a memorable experience where it was almost shouting in my head.

The best way to hear his voice is to give him the opportunity to be heard. Set aside time for studying his word. Then, when you hear it, you can hold up what  you hear to what is in the scriptures and you’ll know the truth.

You also have to set time aside to listen: Time that you can focus on him and just listen. Of course it can be difficult to set that time aside… don’t you think that’s how the enemy wants it?

I am no expert, but these are two ways I have found it much easier to hear his guidance. I am not perfect, but I do find when I am more often in the word and when I set time aside to listen, I hear much more. And I love it.

Prayer: Lord, help someone come across this post today who wants to hear from you but doesn’t know how. Guide her or him to not be frustrated, but instead to hear your voice and be drawn even closer to you. Thank you for wanting to be with me. And for talking to me.

  2. Finding time IS so hard, but I’ve discovered that waking up just 15 or 20 minutes earlier helps me have just a quick quiet time, which I really enjoy doing (especially with some coffee, lol!).
