Strategies for a Simpler Christmas Season: Guest Post, Coupon & Giveaway

Guest post by Jessica Fisher of Life as Mom

So, are you ready for Christmas? I know it’s only November 1st, what gives?

While it may only be the start of November, stores and marketers have been strategizing for months on how to get us into the holiday spirit. My own Lowe’s and Walmart both “decked the halls” about two weeks ago. I was stunned to see the sparkling trees before I’d heard the first “trick or treat.”

Although I understand the importance of planning ahead, this seems a bit much. The battle for our hearts and pocket books is on. What will we spend time and money on this season?

The stores are starting their holiday celebrations now in the hopes that they can extend the spending season as well. The temptation is there for us to overspend and overdo. That means it’s in our best interests to make some plans of our own before we step into the fray.

Consider these strategies for a simpler Christmas season:

Reflect.

What are the most important things for you and your family at the holidays? Once you determine your priorities, you can assign time, money, and effort to those things instead of spending them scattershot.

Resist.

If you have priorities in place, then you’ll be better able to resist unnecessary purchases and commitments. Do the things that suit your family for this year. Don’t feel snookered into something that works for others if it doesn’t work for you.

Rejoice!

This is a time to celebrate God’s goodness, to give thanks for our abundance, to rejoice in the coming of the Savior, and to celebrate new beginnings. Remember that it is a time for great rejoicing. Don’t get bogged down by the unimportant.

Read A Simpler Season

A Simpler Season is a ginormous compendium of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s planning ideas and printable pages. With the busy family in mind, it provides recipes, to-do lists, children’s activity sheets, planning pages, gift ideas, and step-by-step tutorials for creating homemade gifts. There’s even an extensive children’s book list with accompanying activities to do with your kids as well.

It’s not designed to give you more to do, but to provide the tools to make the most of the time you choose.

You can buy A Simpler Season in pdf or on Kindle.

The halls have been decked, but you don’t need to be decked by the holidays. Spend a few moments envisioning the holiday season you want this year. Say yes to the important things and celebrate a simpler season.

What’s a priority for YOU this holiday season?

  1. I need to spend more time with family. Some struggles are too many work hours and not being able to get “things” done in a timely manner.

  2. This year we are working on reaching out to others even more and enjoying the season of giving. Now that the children are older, it seems to be a little easier to focus on that for some reason. :)

  3. I just subscribed.

  4. I’m an email subscriber.

  5. My biggest priority is teaching my two young girls Christmas is about Christ and what leads to the cross. Our biggest challenge to fight against is the gifts that they will receive and letting that not become more important in their hearts.

My biggest priority is going to be giving to others. We used to have many traditions of giving to others but in the past few years we have not done that…this is the year to go back to that.

I think that my biggest priority is helping my children understand the real meaning and significance of the holiday. There are just so many worldly things that combat that goal!

  9. I want to do homemade gifts. But it always seems I have no ideas and being pregnant always makes me tired anyway. ;)

  10. I subscribed to MomsToolBox! Would love to win the book, Simpler Season.

I want to try to do more ahead of time. It is so easy for the time to fly by and suddenly everything need to be done in a crunch.

  13. One priority this season is looking for was to bless others out of joy.

  14. One of our priorities this season is being more generous toward others in need, not just financially, but with our time as well.

  15. As a new wife, my priority this Christmas is to get family Christmases off to a good start, focusing on family and friends and starting a new family tradition.

Our priority will be spending time with family, and showing them we care with meaningful, yet inexpensive gifts. And doing some of sharing our faith through a large Christmas concert.

  17. Sounds cheesy, but we’re really going to strive for a more religious season this year. We have plenty of stuff.

  18. As a “newly retired” Mom I have visions to make this a calm homemade Christmas. I would love this book to guide my inspiration. Thanks for thinking of me.

I would love to get my Christmas shopping done early but other things seem to be popping up that delays that from happening. I tell myself every year that I should shop in July. LOL!
Thanks for the chance to win.
    Have a lovely night.

Would love to win this! My priority this season is to somehow bring a happy time to my father in law when we travel to spend Christmas with him. He lost my mother in law to a heart attack a month ago, so this will be the first Christmas without her-hard, hard, hard!

I would love to win a copy of this book. It sounds great. My priority this year is to make sure my entire family knows we love them. This is the first year we’ll be spending Christmas without extended family as we’re now all spread through the US.

  24. I subscribe via email.

  25. Our priority will be celebrating the birth of Christ, and sharing that celebration with others. Thanks!

  26. My priority is to fully embrace celebrating Christ’s birth and not getting distracted with all the to do lists and material things.

  27. My priority this season is to really take the time to enjoy family & friends without getting uptight about decorations and making sure everything looks picture perfect.

My priority this Christmas will be spending time with my family, but it will be hard to make sure our schedules aren’t overwhelmed because there are so many demands at this time of year.

  30. Jesus, purely Jesus. School activities, concerts, parties, shopping and events can clog the schedule. BUT, if my eyes are on Him, then my priorities will line up as they should, and the stress dissipates.

  31. Our focus will be to focus on Christ through Advent activities, and focus less on gifts. The struggle is that there is so much that we tend to just give up and coast through the season.

I will be seeking to give less gifts, spend less money, and spend more time with family and friends.
