Today at my weekly Weight Watchers meeting our leader asked us why we are investing in our health. Why do we want to lose weight?
She pointed out that joining WW costs money and is quite a lifestyle commitment. Then she asked why we are doing it.
One woman who had lost 90 pounds said that although she is paying membership fees, she is not paying nearly as much for her prescriptions as she used to… she doesn’t need them anymore. So she is not only improving her health, but is saving money.
Another woman said she didn’t want to live in fear of diabetes.
Another woman said she wants to set a good example for her kids… and that she wants to live healthfully for them so that she can enjoy them for many, many years.
Our leader pointed out that many join WW to lose for an event, but that those who commit to make the change for life often DO make that change for life.
I started to think about why I was there. I once lost 30 pounds with WW and losing that weight made me feel fantastic… of course my self-esteem shot up, but I also felt physically better.
I had more energy and wanted to DO more things. I rode in a 2-day 180 mile bike ride last spring. I would not have even considered that before my I lost all that weight.
Losing it gave me energy and proved to myself that I when I put to my mind to something I can achieve it. And it was an answer to prayer. I remember complaining to God about my weight, moping and whining. And I heard the answer: Weight Watchers. So I did it, was successful and loved it.
And then I slipped up.
So why am I back?
I’m back for the same reasons: I want to stop moping and whining about it. I want to accomplish that goal again. I want to feel confident no matter what I wear. And I’m back for a few of the reasons mentioned at the meeting: I want to set a good example for my children. And I want to play with them (and grandchildren someday) for many, many years. I know I can do it.
So, what about you? A few of you have commented or emailed me that you want to lose a few (or more) pounds, too. Why do you want to do it? Once you know, write it down so you don’t forget. Then get set to accomplish your goal.
PS After a week of chronicling almost every morsel I’ve out into my mouth, I lost 3.8 pounds! CHA-CHING! I know, the first week is usually the most exciting, so I can’t expect that next week, but that was quite exciting to see! I’m on my way!!
